At the weekend, I made a visit to Kew Gardens. It was lovely to walk round the gardens while they were relatively quiet (partly due to Covid-19 restrictions, as the glass houses were closed, and partly because the weather forecast was terrible); this large bronze sculpture was situated among some trees, and it was a powerful and really rather moving image. It reminded me of just how central to our idea of “self” our faces are, which is surely part of the reason that losing the ability to control the face is so unsettling…
